To Be Black is a nonprofit organization based in San Diego, California, dedicated to creating a positive platform for Black stories, a trusted resource center, and a growing community that connects people locally and around the world.
We believe Black experiences are diverse, powerful, and worthy of being seen, heard, celebrated, and preserved.
To Be Black was created to provide a space where people can tell their stories, discover resources, connect with others, celebrate culture, and contribute to a larger conversation about Black life and community.
Our mission is to amplify Black voices and stories while creating access to resources and opportunities that strengthen Black communities.
Through storytelling, education, community building, and resource sharing, we strive to create a positive environment where people can connect, learn, grow, and inspire one another.
We envision a world where Black stories are recognized as an essential part of the human story and where Black communities have access to the connections, information, opportunities, and support they need to thrive.
What begins in San Diego can become a worldwide community.
Stories have power.
Sharing our experiences helps people understand one another and creates a record of our communities for future generations.
Representation matters.
People deserve to see the breadth and diversity of Black experiences represented in positive and authentic ways.
Community creates opportunity.
When people connect and support one another, individuals and communities become stronger.
Resources should be accessible.
Finding useful information, organizations, programs, and opportunities should be easier.
Blackness is diverse.
There is no single Black experience, culture, identity, or story.
To Be Black is rooted in San Diego, California, a city with its own rich Black history, culture, creativity, and community.
But our ambitions are global.
We are building To Be Black with the belief that a story from San Diego can inspire someone in Atlanta, London, Johannesburg, Lagos, Kingston, Toronto, or anywhere else in the world.
Our goal is to create a platform that grows with the people who contribute to it.
San Diego is where we begin. The world is where we’re going.
To Be Black is not meant to be built by one person or one organization alone.
It is meant to grow through the people who share their stories, contribute resources, create connections, support the mission, and help us imagine what this community can become.
There is a place for you here.
